Grain season

Grains and grass seeds are harvested at the end of July and in August. Various (agricultural) construction vehicles are used for this. We see a combined harvester or combined harvester and agricultural tippers on the road a lot during this period, in addition to the regular tractors and transport vehicles. Although farmers and contractors do their best to keep their loads in the wagons, some grain may still fall off onto the road. So be especially careful as a motorcyclist or cyclist that you do not slip on loose grain!

Grain season

What can you do...

...As a road user?

  • As a cyclist, pay extra attention to grain on the road during the grain season
  • As a cyclist, do not take the turn too quickly or sharply
  • Don't take any chances Give (agricultural) construction traffic space
  • Make sure you can see the driver of the vehicle at all times.
  • Wave to each other
  • Find a safe place to allow construction vehicles to pass if you are slower

Together we ensure more safety on the road. We can all do something to increase safety.

Where do I come across agricultural traffic?

In general, contractors and farmers choose the shortest route, provided that this route is also easy to drive. Agricultural traffic tries to avoid the (village) centers as long as possible. In Zeeland, a Quality Network Agricultural Traffic Zeeland has been set up. This is a network that the through agricultural traffic uses as main routes. On some routes this is more than 50 vehicles per day during the harvest. Farmers and contractors are called upon to use this network as much as possible.

As a driver, you can pay attention not to drive on rural roads during the harvest if you are in a hurry. On the rural roads you can encounter a lot of agricultural traffic. These roads are often narrow and the vehicles often do not have the space to pull over.
